Dutch Meets West

Born and raised in Utrecht, The Netherlands, Jan Boogman grew up enjoying the country’s cookie of choice—the Stroopwafel. He also grew up running track competitively and, as luck would have it, eventually all the running led to Jan meeting a girl from Montana, USA. Though Judy Goffena grew up a world away on a ranch, a shared love of Track and Field, art and good food was all it took. The two were inseparable from the start.  On your mark, get set…go!

Wanting to bring the delicacy of the Stroopwafel to America, Jan and Judy began making the cookies using a gas flame hand-iron at local festivals and fairs. What began as a summer enterprise in a 10 x 10 foot booth, evolved into a storefront neighborhood shop. Selling their distinctive Caramel Cookie Waffles on 17th Street West in Billings, Montana, they began adding items for dining in or take out. Today Jan and Judy proudly serve a variety of baked goods, soups, sandwiches and their signature Caramel Cookie Waffles.

What is a Stroopwaffle

A Stroopwafel is one of the most popular cookies from The Netherlands. Created by pressing a vanilla and cinnamon dough between gas flame heated waffle irons, the thin cookies are split in two, filled with a rich homemade butter caramel and put back together. In The Netherlands these treats can be found at nearly every bakery, market and grocery store. Our Caramel Cookie Waffles are handmade on original Dutch equipment brought from The Netherlands.

Originating in the Dutch city of Gouda, the first Stroopwafels were made in the 19th century. The cookie caught on quickly and with a few short years bakers across the country were making their own. Similar griddle cookies can be found in other cultures: the French Gaufrette, the Italian Pizzelli , the Scandinavian Krumkake. You can still find fresh Stroopwafels being made in the weekly open air markets as well as being able to buy them in grocery stores and bakeries. When you enjoy a fresh Caramel Cookie Waffle you are experiencing a taste shared by generations not only in The Netherlands but also in Billings, Montana, USA.
